A confirmed critical advisory
On October 15, 2026, BeyondTrust published advisory BT26-05 for CVE-2026-102764 (CVSS v4.0: 9.3). Internal Remote Support components did not adequately validate message origins. A remote unauthenticated attacker could consequently perform unauthorized file operations on a vulnerable appliance.
On October 16, the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security noted public reporting of exploitation in the wild. That does not establish that any given installation was compromised.
Which deployments need action?
BeyondTrust Remote Support versions up to and including 26.2.3 are affected. Patch BT26-05-RS applies to versions 24.3.1 through 26.2.3; older versions must first be upgraded. BeyondTrust says Remote Support SaaS deployments were patched by October 9, 2026. Self-hosted operators should verify patch application, even if automatic updates are enabled.
Patching and investigation answer different questions
Patching closes a known path for future attacks. It does not reveal whether that path was exploited beforehand. If the appliance was exposed, both remediation and investigation matter. Conversely, running a vulnerable version is not proof of compromise.
Five checks to perform
- Inventory all remote-support deployments, including test and forgotten systems.
- Check each version and patch status against the vendor advisory.
- Restrict Internet-facing administration and privileged access.
- Review logs and unusual changes involving connections, files, accounts, permissions and outbound traffic; preserve evidence.
- When compromise indicators appear, contain the appliance and investigate systems it could access with incident responders.
The broader lesson
Remote administration systems are high-value targets because they can reach other assets. Secure operation combines inventory, timely updates, least privilege, strong authentication, network restrictions, logging and incident-response preparation. Availability monitoring alone cannot detect every form of misuse.
