Veeam security advisories: patching critical backup systems

On October 28, 2026, France's CERT-FR published an advisory covering multiple Veeam products. Protecting backup infrastructure is essential to restoring operations after an incident.

Why backup software requires special attention

Backup servers can hold privileged credentials and access critical business data. CERTFR-2026-AVI-1399 lists risks including remote code execution, data disclosure and privilege escalation. Actual exposure depends on the deployed product, configuration and service accessibility.

A critical Backup & Replication issue

CVE-2026-108142 is rated 9.1/10 by Veeam. It involves an unauthenticated authorization bypass in the CDP Coordinator service. Administrators should establish whether the affected service is present and exposed rather than assume that every installation has the same risk.

Which versions should you check?

ProductPatched threshold in the CERT-FR advisory
Veeam Backup & Replication 13.0.x13.0.3 (build 13.0.3.63)
Veeam Backup & Replication 13.1.x13.1.2 (build 13.1.2.57)
Veeam Agent for Linux13.1.2 (build 13.1.2.11)
Veeam Backup for Microsoft 3658.6 Patch 1 (build 8.6.0.5011)
Veeam ONE13.1 P1 (build 13.1.0.7940)

These thresholds reflect the October 28 advisory. Check product-specific vendor guidance for other branches, deployment types and migrations; Veeam documents special considerations for Windows-to-Linux migration.

A safe patching checklist

  1. Inventory: capture exact versions and build numbers across servers, agents and consoles.
  2. Assess exposure: identify reachable services, privileged roles and affected integrations.
  3. Verify recovery: check isolated or immutable backup copies and rehearse restoration before major maintenance.
  4. Plan upgrades: read release notes, validate compatibility, schedule maintenance and document recovery options.
  5. Apply official fixes: use Veeam downloads and instructions, then confirm backup and restore operations.
  6. Review evidence: preserve relevant logs if compromise is suspected; a patch does not erase prior attacker activity.

Backups must remain recoverable

Security updates are one layer. Strong access controls, separation from production, monitored backup jobs and regular restoration tests make recovery more dependable.
